Last Saturday (August 4th) was Rachel’s 22 Birthday. We had decided early on, to celebrate it at Lake Michigan. Since Both Rachel and I are car-less we don’t get to the lake as often as we’d like.. and we hadn’t even got there yet this year!
I had been communicating back and forth with friends, and had organized enough cars to take us and all the party guests. The day of the party, I was making the birthday cake and trying to ignore the fact that it was becoming darker and cloudier with every hour….
About 20 minutes before the guests arrived, we got 3 or 4 phone calls warning us that a really big storm was coming — this news was made all the more bitter by the fact that it had only rained like 3 times all summer, yes, the drought ending storm was coming.

Rachel was crest-fallen, and I was trying to put on a brave face — but we both knew that we weren’t going to be able arrange anything like this again for a really long time. As the guests trickled in we tried to figure out what we were going to do…
We talked to everyone, but in the end it was Rachel’s decision — and against all the odds, she chose to go to the lake anyway. As we piled into the two cars it began to sprinkle, it takes about 45 minutes to drive to the lake from Grand Rapids and during that whole time it poured rain.
As we pulled up at the beach, the rain stopped — and the clouds parted to reveal one of the prettiest sunsets I’ve ever seen, bright pink sky – with a red sun and swirling lumpy clouds.
The beach was completely deserted as we all raced into the water, the lake was warm and calm, it felt amazing. We swam for about an hour before it started to rain again.
It struck me that night – that NOTHING ever goes how you think it’s going to go, or how you plan it to go! but sometimes it’s better. Also sometimes you’ve just got to go to the fucking beach — even though there’s a thunder-storm warning.
P.S. Rachel is lactose intolerant so I made a vegan carrot cake, It was a big hit! Here’s the recipe I used (Vegan Carrot Cake) — I added grated fresh ginger and crystallized ginger to it as well.
