I love sewing and have always felt most comfortable sewing by hand. I have had a sewing machine for about 5 years now but I am still in the very beginning stage’s of using it. I tend to blindly jump into projects without reading the directions. This learning style has definitely not helped me in my sewing machine adventures! That being said I love the look of hand stitched cloth. and I have a lot of patience for it. Since I would like to make a living off my hand-made things, I know that the speed of a sewing machine would be invaluable. So I really want to make some simple things with it. But when it’s not going well and I get frustrated I know I can always make a button bracelet and feel in control again.

  1. I know what you mean. I use my sewing machine for projects where I really can’t sew by hand; recently, I had to sew about 20 feet of lace onto the bottom of one of my Gunne Sax dresses. Definitely a job for the sewing machine. My hand sewing is very messy though, and the only thing I do well is buttons. Oh, well.

Your hand sewing is admirable, Rose! I can’t wait to see what you sew with the machine once you get the hang of it!
