Every sunday night at our house we have potlucks. This has been a great way to stay connected with the creative people in our life. It has been really encouraging to talk and share ideas and things we are struggling with. I think that if you are a creative person it is really important to surround your self with other creative people. every artistic movement was spawned out of a bunch poor artistic friends that influenced each others work like the beatnick poets Allen Ginsberg, Jack Kerouac, William Burroughs, Or anther model is andy warhol’s factory where you take a venue and cram in as many creative people as you can this is a little dangerous but also very magical who knows what might happen? Everyone has different talents and there is strength in numbers. One thing that Grand Rapids has going for it is that it is pretty cheap to live here! Our family moved to New York because of the way my dad remembered it in the early 80s as an artistic haven, but it was no longer the same place it had been gentrified to the point ware the only thing on everyones mind was how in the world they were going to keep up with the rent for there tiny apartment. Although there are some people that can make this work, our family could not, so we moved back to are conservative midwestern city and never looked back. Artists are what makes city’s interesting and leaving to move somewhere sexier (Yes i mean you Portland) is selfish it is your job to make it interesting! Our Sunday night groups have helped us with so many different projects including The Wonder Wagon, plan B., urban gardening, helping each other figure out ETSY, and so much more.
